A bit about us and the technology

Dalco Technologies was  formed for the purpose of distributing multi-tier solutions to businesses, developers and web designers. We have fully embraced the concept of practical multi-tier database technology through dbOvernet, our first product for this field.

dbOvernet is unique. It may very well be the first of its kind in the history of database computing. dbOvernet arose with the advent of world network philosophies and stands ready to provide a new functionality to database communication.

Our goal is to combine low cost and practical functionality with easy-to-use component sets and exemplary sample and example programs. The examples on this site clearly demonstrate our commitment to this philosophy. Other multi-tier solutions will simply appear cumbersome, time-consuming and too complex and expensive once you've worked with dbOvernet's sleek interface.

Flexibility is the key - open architecture is the method

An important feature of any multi-tier enabler like dbOvernet is that you are not restricted to a single, limiting model.

Multi-tier technology is so new no one has a clear vision of how, exactly, it should be used. Therefore, we offer an open architecture built on a model that ranges from doing all the work for you to enabling you to create your own solution paths.

We chose to develop with an open architecture that gives us excellent flexibility, power, speed and adaptability. Instead of limiting you as a developer to a framework mandated by the viewpoint of the software engineer, our open architecture lets you use dbOvernet in any way you choose, to solve any and all problems you might confront.

For instance, through component properties and built-in methods, one option - the client-side SQL model - enables you to design with dbOvernet as if it was a typical 2-tier, client/server application.

This model uses fully-qualified SQL expressions generated by the client application and passed through the middleware layer to the server databases by generic server side handlers. There are a couple of extra things we do, like pre-processing to the server side before updating client-side records to ensure synchronicity, but these are quite automatic, for the most part.

Most developers will likely use the client-side SQL model. It's the most familiar. Through it, we provide generic routines equivalent to SQL and ExecSQL to retrieve data from the server and pass inserts, updates and deletes to the server. We include ExecCacheSQL, a variation on ExecSQL to handle cached updating. We also provide User to move user information, and MetaData, to move table structure information between the client and server.

We also provide the source code to these handlers, so you can modify them or use them as templates to build alternate handlers. It takes only a few minutes to create your own handler classes.

That's what we mean by flexibility.

Technically, the n-tier concept suggests that the client side should not have any responsibility for, or knowledge of, how data is managed at the server side. dbOvernet's open architecture supports that concept as well.

You can readily design solutions that access any data structure in any operating environment, over single or distributed computers. Your solutions can let you move to different backends, without affecting the middle layer, business rules, or the client-side applications. You can easily create new data communication routines to transmit anything between the client and server, from flat-file and document-based tables to voice and image files.

dbOvernet's architecture is designed to serve you now and in the future. It doesn't limit you to just traditional database information. You can use the client-side SQL model and your own data movement designs, at the same time. You can combine them with variations that push messages from the server to the client, and solutions that spread the database workload over several computers.

dbOvernet is open and flexible.

Enough talk. Have a look at our examples, download our eval. version - you'll quickly see what we mean.

When you're ready to buy, the Developer Kit provides everything you need as a developer to develop and demonstrate applications - the component and controls set, source code to all the example programs, 30 days of email-based product support.

For the best buy, consider the Developer Kit, components source code and a single license at a special discounted price.

The genesis of Dalco

If you're interested, Dalco Consulting is owned Fred R. Dalgleish, C.A., MBA. The company provides consulting and development services to business and developers and has been operating since 1987.

We have developed advanced, specialized computer applications for the senior accounting community, auction systems, sales and marketing tools and alliance management products using a variety of tools, from low-level program languages to high-level RAD tools.

Fred Dalgleish was one of the first developers to embrace RAD technology in the Windows environment through Superbase, the granddaddy of today's RAD Windows tools. Starting in 1987, he authored two books on the product and became a leading guru on Superbase. Dalco Consulting provided both professional services and training products to the Superbase developer community. The onslaught and low pricing of Microsoft in the mid/late-80s with Access, followed by Borland's powerhouse Paradox, put Superbase out of the running. Dalco Consulting continued developing with Superbase until the release of Delphi 1.0.
